OUr unique CHALLENGE IS TO MOVE THE RACE EVERY 2-3 YEARS TO A NEW TRAIL THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY OVERGROWN
This race series is a fundraiser for Friends of Kachemak Bay State Parks. The hopes & dreams of this series is for Friends to continue clearing existing trails enough that every 2 to 3 years, we can move the race to a new location and rotate around to different amazing trails in Kachemak Bay State Park that had not been accessible before. Many Park trails have been lost to brush, due to zero State funding. All the trails maintained in this race series are cleared by Volunteers of Friends of Kachemak Bay State Parks. When this race gets moved to a new location - it means the dream is being realized and there's more cleared stunning trails in the Park for ALL to use! 3 years ago we could not imagine having a race on Sadie Knob but we did in 2022 and 2023! When we had the Grace Ridge race for 3 years, the first 2 years were very brushy and you could still get lost, but now Grace Ridge is hike-able! There's 84 miles of trails in KBSP that were created with Exxon oil spill money years ago, but no funding is provided by State of Alaska for maintaining them. Friends has helped clear and open up about 25 miles of those trails. Our goal is to get more miles of existing trails open and to stay open.
